In powder coating, powdery, solvent-free coating material (duroplastic or thermoplastic plastics) is applied to the work-piece and melted by the action of heat. After cooling, the component is then coated with a closed layer.
Powder coatings are solvent-free, solid coating materials and consist of finely ground polymers - with or without fillers and pigments, depending on the application. The dry, granular particles (1 and 100 µm) are based on epoxy, polyester or acrylic resins, on polyamide, polyurethane, polyethylene, polyvenyl chloride or ethylene-venyl alcohol copolymer. The respective cross-linking temperatures are between 130°C and 240°C.
In addition to metallic and other thermally resilient substrate materials, the process is also used for coil coating and MDF coating. Depending on the powder coating, typical areas of application are the automotive and furniture industries as well as façade and window elements, pipes, apparatus engineering, wire goods or glass bottles.
