Chemical resistance refers to the resistance of components or work pieces to the effects of chemicals.
In the area of surfaces in particular, chemical resistance is an elementary property that is often required. To achieve this a corresponding coating is required, depending on the area of application. The choice of coating material is especially important here. Because insufficient chemical resistance results in the following negative consequences for the coated component: from blistering to the flaking of the coating from the substrate, loss of sheen and discoloration - up to the complete destruction of the coating. In addition, chemicals can even trigger or accelerate the corrosion of the base material. In view of this, the selected coating must be compared to the specifications and the possible stresses from chemicals.
The chemical resistance of surface coatings is identified via various standardized test procedures. These include testing in accordance with VDA test sheet 612-412:1985. The evaluation of quantity and extent of coating damage and the intensity of changes in the appearance of coatings is undertaken in accordance with DIN EN ISO 4628-1.
