Vapour barriers and brakes are intended to limit the amount of water vapour “migrating” into the component. The technical term for this is water vapour diffusion. The objective is to prevent an impermissibly high level of condensation (condensation water) in the component - especially in the thermal insulation. On the one hand, this would impair the effectiveness of the insulation; on the other hand, a too high level of condensation may result in a massive damage to the wooden construction of the roof structure. As efficient protection, the vapour barrier/brake ensures that the air humidity from the living spaces cannot even penetrate the roof structure by damaging it.
Vapour barriers/brakes not only prevent the moisture penetration into the insulation but also the air from flowing through the thermally insulated layers of the components.
Although the two terms are often used interchangeably, the vapour barrier and the vapour inhibitor are not exactly the same thing.
The vapour barrier differs from the vapour inhibitor when it comes to its diffusion resistance. In this context, the decisive factor is the SD value, which is specified in meters. It stands for the "water vapour diffusion equivalent air layer thickness" and describes the water vapour permeability of a component layer or if a building material (such as for example a vapour barrier or vapour inhibitor). In this context, the following principle applies: the higher the SD value, the less water vapour quantity the material lets through.

There are also vapour inhibitors having a flexible SD value. The product DELTA®-NOVAFLEXX, for example, changes its SD value according to the air humidity between 0.2 m in very humid and 5 m in dry ambient air.
