Shallow pitting corrosion

Shallow pitting is a special form of surface corrosion: Slight irregularities in the material composition can lead to locally-varying rates of surface corrosion without defined boundaries. The unevenness of the corrosion is the result of local variations in material and medium and the subsequent spatial separation of anode and cathode areas.
